Practice Oral Exams with an AI Avatar

Prepare for oral exams of any kind, Bachelor, Master, viva voce, state board, professional licensing or in-house certification. The AI avatar plays a demanding examiner who asks subject-matter questions, follows up when answers are weak and ends with detailed feedback on content, structure and delivery.

Realistic exam pressure

The avatar behaves like a real examiner, with follow-up questions and rising difficulty.

Detailed feedback

Receive structured feedback on content, argumentation and delivery after every session.

Any discipline

From law to medicine to business, scenarios for every subject and every exam format.

Facing a panel: two examiners at once

Most oral exams are not conducted by a single person. A university viva has an examiner and an assessor, a state or board examination puts a whole panel across the table. For many candidates that is the hard part: several people listening, taking notes and pressing on different points.

That is what the conversation format is for. In tandem mode two examiners stay side by side on screen the whole time, so you can see how each of them reacts, including the one who is saying nothing. For larger panels there is the meeting view, with one examiner shown large and up to four more as tiles; the large picture switches to whoever is speaking. For each character the course leader decides which face it has, what it is called, what role it takes and when it joins in.

The two-character view splits the screen and therefore needs a window at least 900 points wide. On a narrow phone the same scenario runs as a one-to-one exam and tells you why. A minute of conversation counts once, no matter how many examiners are on screen.

How strictly the examiner presses is a setting

When an exam scenario is set up, someone decides how hard the follow-up questions get: lenient, standard or strict. Alongside that come the topic blocks in rough order and a closing formula. The avatar works through those blocks and digs into answers that sound complete but stay on the surface. It does not praise you during the exam and gives no interim verdict, so the situation feels like the real thing rather than a practice session.

The assessment comes afterwards. It walks through the topic blocks one by one and says, for each, what you handled confidently, what stayed shallow and what you never covered, quoting your own words back to you.

Frequently asked questions

How does an oral exam simulation work?

You pick a scenario, start the conversation and speak with the AI avatar through your microphone. The avatar acts as a demanding examiner, asking subject-matter questions and following up whenever an answer is unclear. After the conversation you receive detailed feedback on content, structure and delivery. Most sessions run around 15 minutes, but you can end at any point and still get a full evaluation.

Which subjects are supported?

Trainexus is subject-agnostic. Currently the most active fields are business and marketing, law, medicine, food science, physics and athletics. At the University of Bayreuth, a study with 390 students on marketing exam preparation was conducted in early 2026; publication is in preparation. In principle any discipline can be modelled.

What do I need technically?

A current browser, a microphone and an internet connection. It works best on tablets and laptops, phone screens are too small. No app is required.

Can I bring in my own exam material?

Yes. Through the studio inside the app, or together with our team, lecture notes, exam regulations or domain terminology can be loaded in. The avatar then responds with subject-matter precision and tests exactly the content that is relevant.

Does practising with an AI examiner help against exam nerves?

For many people, yes. Exam nerves often come from the unknown: you do not know how follow-up questions will feel or how you will react under pressure. In the simulation you experience exactly that, as often as you like and without anyone watching. In a teaching project at the German Sport University Cologne, 26 students prepared for their oral module exam with the dialogue simulation specifically to reduce exam anxiety. Once you have been through the situation several times, the real exam feels far less threatening.

How is this different from flashcards or chatting with ChatGPT?

Flashcards and text chats test whether you know something. An oral exam demands more: speaking freely, structuring your thoughts and reacting to unexpected follow-up questions. That is exactly what you practise here, out loud and in dialogue with an avatar that probes like a real examination panel. The feedback afterwards refers to your spoken words, not to answers you clicked.

How often can I practise, and what does it cost?

As often as you like; billing is based on conversation time, not per attempt. Prices start at 30 euros per hour of conversation, and a trial account with 10 minutes is free. You do not need an appointment, and the simulator is available around the clock in your browser.
